Four Cool Places to Canoe and Kayak in the Catskills
Coming to the Catskills for a warm weather vacation? With so many lakes, rivers, and reservoirs in our region, canoeing and kayaking is always a fun summer activity. There are many places to rent canoes and kayaks, or to launch from if you’ve brought your own. Here are some of the best places to canoe and kayak in the Catskills.
The East Branch of the Delaware River
If you don’t have your own canoe or kayak, rent one at Al’s Sport Shop in Downsville, and head out on the beautiful East Branch of the Delaware river. You can choose the shorter ride or the longer ride, and there are multiple canoes and kayaks to choose from.
We love this ride for its easy-to-navigate waters - the river is pretty shallow and not too fast-moving, so it’s a great ride for older kids and families. Downsville is about 30 minutes from the Inn.
Canoe or Kayak on Alder Lake
Alder Lake is a short few minutes drive from the Inn, and a very peaceful spot to canoe or kayak. It’s a great space to check out if you’ve brought your own canoe or kayak up for the weekend.
The West Branch of the Delaware River
The West Branch of the Delaware is deeper than the East Branch and the waters can be a little bit rougher. It’s a great ride through the beautiful farm country.
Kayak on Lake Wawaka
If you have younger kids, a nice kayak on Lake Wawaka is perfect. Rent a kayak and say hi to the pheasants at Susan’s Pleasant Pheasant Farm.
